Obama congratulates Sirisena on being elected as Sri Lankan president

U.S. President Barack Obama on Friday congratulated Maithripala Sirisena on being elected as Sri Lanka's new president, pledging to deepen partnership between the two countries.

In the congratulatory message, Obama said the United States looks forward to deepening its partnership with the people and the new government of Sri Lanka under the leadership of President Sirisena.

He also praised the outgoing administration of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa for facilitating a swift transition of power and the Sri Lankans for casting the ballots peacefully.

Sirisena, a former health minister, defeated Rajapaksa in Thursday's presidential election. Endite
