Canadian trade apprentices entitled to gov't loans

Xinhua, January 9, 2015 Adjust font size:

Canadian trade apprentices can begin to apply for government loans of up to 3,380 U.S. dollars per period of technical training, Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Thursday.

Harper made the announcement during a visit to the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) and Vancouver Community College campus in Delta, a Vancouver suburb.

The loans, over 845,000 U.S. dollars in total and covering 26,000 apprentices, will be interest-free for a maximum of six years till they complete or leave their program.

Harper said it is the first time Canada uses the Student Loan program to cover trades apprentices, and it is important to discard the notion of vocational education being inferior to university. Endi
