World No. 3 Simona Halep took an easy win in the WTA quarter-finals here in Shenzhen Open on Thursday.

She will face Zheng Saisai in the semifinal, the only Chinese survivor in the last four.

Halep dominated from the start against Aleksandra Krunic, a qualifier who defeated Anna Schmiedlova of Slovakia on Wednesday. Two commanding 6-3 victories in both sets helped the Romanian make the last four in 62 minutes.

The contest was tighter between Zheng and Kazakhstan's Zarina Diyas, who both belong to the coaching team led by Ma Weikai. As the world No. 32, Diyas stormed to 6-3 before Zheng replied with a 4-2 lead in the second set. Zheng won the second set 7-6 (2) and took the third 6-2.

Russian Vera Zvonareva withdrew with 2-3 down in the first set due to back injury, sending her doubles partner Timea Bacsinszky to the semis. Bacsinszky will meet world No. 4 Petra Kvitova, who beat Tereza Smitkova in a Czech derby, 7-5, 6-4.

"I know that she (Bacsinszky) can play very well, and I remember her game in Wuhan. She can be very dangerous and give me pressure. That's what I should prepare for," said Kvitova. Endi
