A new type of service emerging in Chinese cities will free drivers from traffic jams by offering replacement drivers, the Chutian Metropolis Daily reported.
There are several companies offering replacement driver services in Wuhan, central China's Hubei Province. When stuck in a queue of cars during peak hours, a driver can now call one of these companies for assistance.
Two assistants will be dispatched: one of them will escort the car owner to their destination via electric scooter, while the other remains in the car to steer the car out of the congestion.
Companies that provide such service are showing up in a number of Chinese cities. The average starting price is 100 yuan for ten kilometers, plus some extra fees based on the traveled distance.
The service is welcomed by urban car-owners as more automobiles are swarming city streets and drivers spend more time in traffic jams.
Nonetheless, some have also expressed doubts over the business, raising questions regarding its legality, safety of person and property, the likelihood of aggravating congestion and the possible violation of traffic regulations.
