China launched an ambitious anti-diabetes campaign, the Blue Light Campaign, Wednesday in Chinese capital city of Beijing to promote diabetes prevention.
Blue light will light up landmarks globally on the UN World Diabetes Day every November 14th to arouse people's attention towards diabetes prevention, hence the name of the campaign. This November 14th, some famed Chinese landmarks will for the first time beam blue light to convey that message.
China has been greatly affected by diabetes with some 90 million people having been diagnosed with the disease. The Blue Light Campaign will hopefully educate 100 million people and screen 100 thousand by the end of this year.
The Blue Light Campaign will launch diabetes prevention education and provide free diabetes check ups for the public this year from July to December.
In addition, Beijing will host a Great-wall-climbing activity involving some 1000 people on the UN World Diabetes Day this year.
Advocates of the campaign hope to encourage the whole society to fight against the disease by organizing these activities.
Diabetes kills some 3.8 million people per year. The total number of the diabetes-diagnosed in 2010 reached 280 million.
The UN set up the World Diabetes Day in 2006 to arouse global attention towards the worldwide common ailment.
