HK Closes 3 More Schools amid Flu Scare

Hong Kong's education authorities announced on Saturday three more secondary schools would suspend classes for 14 days starting June 21 to avoid further spread of the A/H1N1 flu among students.

The three schools are Delia Memorial School (Hip Wo) in Kwun Tong, Ning Po College in Kwun Tong and West Island School in the Southern District, according to information on the HKSAR government's website.

The decision was made after a joint assessment by Hong Kong's Education Bureau and the Department of Health (DH) after infections were detected in the schools.

A spokesperson from the Education Bureau said the schools would "put in place contingency measures relating to class suspension and inform parents of the arrangements."

During the class suspension period, the schools would strengthen measures to ensure environmental hygiene, including thoroughly cleansing and disinfecting the school premises, and arrange staff to be on duty to handle school affairs and answer parents' inquiries.

All kindergartens, primary schools and special schools in Hong Kong started a 14-week suspension on June 12 and a handful of secondary schools have been suspended since then.

The government will decide if schools need to be closed for an early summer vacation next week, local media said.
