Top legislator Wu Bangguo on Monday urged tighter supervision on the implementation of the law on the protection of minors, which marked its first anniversary on Sunday, the Children's Day holiday.

Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), issued written instructions to the first plenary session of the team charged with supervising the law's implementation, saying that the process should be well-organized and results-oriented.

The team should discover the major problems that affect minors' physical and mental health and those that impinge on minors' legal rights and prompt society, schools and homes to better fulfill their responsibilities regarding the protection of minors, Wu said.

Wang Zhaoguo, vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the NPC, told the meeting that since the law was implemented, much progress had been made. He cited the all-out efforts in the rescue and protection of children after the 8.0-magnitude Sichuan earthquake struck on May 12.

However, problems remained, Wang said, without elaborating.

He also urged the inspectors involved with implementing the law to discover problems and offer solutions.

In 2008, the NPC Standing Committee will check the implementation of five laws, starting with the law on the protection of minors.

The inspection team will go to several provinces including Liaoning, Hunan, Guizhou and Jiangsu in early and mid-June on their mission.

The revised Law on Minors Protection took effect on June 1, 2007.
