Against haze in early morning, Gao Yaqian, who usually wears a red gym suit and plaits a ponytail, scampers and frolics en route to school, with smiling faces all the way.Gao Yaqian was under spotlight after a news photo showed her helpless, petrified, consternated and a swollen face covered with dust and mud, with oxygen hose in nostril, a shocking sight under caliginous light, when her school in Lirang Town was seriously hit in the massive earthquake on May 12, 2008.Now, the so-called "Face Girl", previously on account of consternation, has turned into another complexion of brisk, happiness, and loveliness. Gao can still recall the moment when the earthquake jolted her school one and half years ago. "The classroom was shaky, block of dust fell down, people could not stand stable," she said. As other pupils swarmed to the corridor to escape, Gao slipped down. "Had it not for the teachers rushed to help me out, I had been sure to suffer worse wounds." At the moment she was rescued, she was in trance, limp and feeble, truly petrified. Her life was restored to normal very soon, as reconstruction of her hometown picked up pace and a new teaching building resistable to earthquake on 7 Richter Scale has been completed.Gao Yaqian becomes more brightened as she gets convalescence, while made progress in studying. Like many classmates, they are more often prone to burst into laughter. Now, a happy face girl, Gao Yaqian understands more about true meaning of life, and become diligent in doing housework. The happy face girl also won a top 10 award in the performance of Odes to Homeland last August.
