A New Zealand export lobby group onTuesday called for the government to begin enhancing the country'sfree trade agreements with the Association of Southeast AsianNations (ASEAN) and China.

A recent survey of exporters hadshown the ASEAN market was the most mentioned as the next market toenter, followed by China, according to the Employers andManufacturers Association.

"We have good free trade agreementswith both China and ASEAN, but now is clearly the time to startenhancing those agreements with ways to remove barriers to NewZealand exporters," chief executive officer Kim Campbell said in astatement.

"The barriers posed by registrationsystems, approval systems and over regulation within some marketsshould be the focus of the next round of negotiations," saidCampbell.

"There are international standardsthat could become the basis of acceptance of many goods, and mutualrecognition of standards and regulatory controls is another way toallow New Zealand manufactured goods to enter China and ASEANcountries."

With the ASEAN agreement due forreview this year, and the Regional Comprehensive EconomicPartnership (RCEP) being negotiated, it was a timely reminder ofthe focus of exporters, said Campbell. Endi
