China to Enhance Public Awareness of Environmental Protection

China plans to enhance the public's awareness of environmental protection by ensuring their access to the environmental information and encouraging their participation in environmental protection activities, according to a newly-released guideline.

The guideline, co-issued by the State Environmental Protection Administration, the Ministry of Education and the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, said that the government should ensure the public's rights to know and supervise the issues related to environmental protection.

The government should also encourage the volunteers and non-governmental organizations to organize and take part in environmental protection activities, according to the guideline.

The guideline also urged publishing companies and film studios to produce a books and movies about environmental protection to improve public awareness.

China has been facing many environmental problems while the economy continues its double-digit growth.

The government began to pay more attention to environmental protection after Premier Wen Jiabao called to make the reduction of energy consumption and pollution the key to restructuring the economy in 2007.
