UN Further Supports Western Development

The United Nations will enhance its support for the development of China's west, an important part of the UN's cooperation with China.

Resident Representative of UN Development Program Khalid Malik said this at the 2004 China Western Forum in Nanning, the capital of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

He proposes that China invests more in education, medical treatment and sanitation in its western region.

UN organizations in China are now cooperating with local governments on three items to support the development of China's west: They are related to anti-poverty projects in rural areas, training of local officials and theoretical research on western development.
