Miss Christine Zhen-Wei Qiang, economist and World Bank Task
Manager with the Development Gateway program, visited the
headquarters of the China Development Gateway (CnDG) in Beijing on
September 27.
At
the one-hour meeting with Miss Qiang, the CnDG team reviewed
progress they have made in the past year and, in particular, what
they are planning for future development as consistent contribution
of China to the Gateway Foundation.
Formally launched on May 28, 2002 after one-year operation on
trial, the China Development Gateway is developing smoothly with
more content in both English and Chinese updated daily with some
new technology adopted so as to have a closer link with the Global
Development Gateway and other country gateways. What needs
mentioning is that the World Bank financed project is taking a
prominent role in promoting China's anti-poverty movement by
producing news and feature on poverty relief and development.
Miss Qiang said that the World Bank side appreciated the effort and
achievements made by the CnDG team through maintaining and
enriching the website (www.chinagateway.com.cn).
She also put forward some suggestions for CnDG to go further and
faster in joining and contributing to projects that the Global
Development Gateway advocated such as dgMarket and AIDA. Miss Qiang
encouraged the CnDG team to enhance idea exchange with other
country gateways so as to share information and experiences.
Also participating in the meeting was Mr. Liu Zhengrong, deputy
director of the Internet Bureau of the State Council Information
Office. Mr. Liu reaffirmed the government's support to the CnDG
project, saying that it was really a model project of China-World
Bank cooperation and will contribute a lot more to the cause of
poverty relief and development in China through the use of
Internet.
