Vice Premier: China Promotes Doha Round Talks

Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan told World Trade Organization Director-General Pascal Lamy on Monday that China has always actively promoted the Doha Round talks.

In a meeting with Lamy, Wang said the Chinese government has always supported trade liberalization and facilitation, firmly opposed trade protectionism and strongly supported the multilateral trade system.

Applauding Lamy's work for pushing forward the Doha Round talks, Wang said safeguarding the multilateral trade system and promoting world trade would help the economic prosperity of every nation and narrow the gap between the South and the North.

"This accords with direction of the world trade growth," he said.

Wang said China would try to handle its own problems to ensure the stability of the finance, economy and capital markets against the backdrop of current global financial crisis.

At the same time, China would take a responsible attitude and concrete actions and would actively participate in international cooperation to safeguard the stability of global economy and finance.

Praising China's role in pushing forward the Doha Round talks, Lamy said all nations should work together to repel trade protectionism and strive for the early conclusion of the Doha talks.
