Romania Keen to Attract Chinese Investment

Romania hopes that more Chinese enterprises will invest in its infrastructure, a visiting Romanian official said in Beijing on Tuesday.

Florin Vasilache, General Secretary of Foreign Investment of Romania, made the remarks at an investment forum held at the Romanian Embassy.

Romanian infrastructure is inadequate and the country has only one highway, Vasilache said, adding that the country will borrow 33 billion euros from the EU to build infrastructure from 2007 to 2013.

Chinese enterprises are welcome to contribute to building bridges, airports, hydro- and fuel-powered stations, railways and highways, he said, pointing out that Romania could serve as a convenient platform to allow Chinese firms to bid for other projects in the European Union (EU).

There are now 8,686 Chinese firms registered, accounting for almost 7 percent of all foreign-funded companies.

However, the contracted investment of Chinese enterprises only accounts for 1.2 percent of Romania's total contracted foreign investment, according to the Romanian embassy.
