Citizens were ordered Sunday to always carry their identity cards or driver's licenses for police checks when they go out in Xinjiang's capital city of Urumqi.

Police will take away for interrogation anyone who does not have a card, said the Urumqi Public Security Bureau.

The move comes a week after the riot in the city in which 184 died.

"Citizens are strictly banned from holding dangerous articles including batons or knives in urban streets or public venues" said the bureau's notice, adding that any of those items would be confiscated by police or patrolling members of the Armed Police.

The move was to "prevent a tiny number of individual criminals from the riot who were still at large from seeking revenge and to protect the safety of lives and property of citizens", the notice said.

Citizens are also banned from shouting slogans, posting banners, distributing leaflets or gathering for lectures in city streets orpublic venues, the notice said.

Police will immediately disperse gatherings and confiscate the propaganda materials and take away key members for interrogation according to law, it said.
