Experts Call for Ethnic Unity

Four experts have briefed Chinese and international journalists on Xinjiang. They are professors from the Xinjiang Academy of Social Sciences and Xinjiang Normal University.
The four experts agree prospects are good for development in Xinjiang.
Abdurazat Tumur, director of Xinjiang Academy of Social Sciences, said, "The per capita disposable income in Xinjiang is more than 11 thousand yuan a year. That's higher than the national average."
But they say hostile forces both inside and out do not want a prosperous Xinjiang and a stronger China.
They point out Xinjiang has implemented the ethnic and religious policies laid down by the central government.
They say during the past sixty years, the autonomous region has developed a new type of relationship of equality, unity and mutual assistance among all ethnic groups.
Experts say the unrest will not slow Xinjiang's development, nor derail its ethnic autonomy policy.
Wu Fuhuan, director of Xinjiang Academy of Social Sciences, said, "This event made people in Xinjiang realize the importance of ethnic unity. Xinjiang is an autonomous region which consists people from many ethnic groups. So ethnic unity is the foundation."
The experts called on people to cherish the hard-won ethnic unity and development opportunities. The goal is to ensure a harmonious society and maintain social stability.
