Shanghai Expo site is estimated to generate more than 150 tonnes of garbage per day, which is within its processing capacity, said sources with the company in charge of the Expo's trash disposal.
"With our existing facilities, the Expo site could be kept clean as we are able to process more than 200 tonnes of garbage per day," said Yuan Shumin, head of the World Expo subbranch of the Shanghai Environmental Industry Co. Ltd.
The Expo is expected to draw 70 million visitors, or about 400,000 daily, in six months.
With an expected daily influx of 400,000 visitors, Yuan predicted the park will produce about 152 tonnes of trash a day, including 28 tonnes from dining.
During the trial run in the past ten days, the park generated a maximum 193 tonnes of trash a day as many exhibitors were still decorating their pavilions and produced some architectural garbage.
To ensure a clean Expo park, authorities increased garbage disposal facilities after the trial run. On the list are two garbage trucks, 1,000 240-liter dustbins, and 250 660-liter dustbins.
Despite the efforts, Yuan called on the public to be more aware of environmental protection and deal with the trash properly.
