Hu Jintao Marks Int'l Women's Day

Female representatives have gathered in Beijing to mark the 100th anniversary of International Women's day. President Hu Jintao delivered a speech at the meeting.

Hu Jintao reviewed China's women's movement over the past decades. He spoke highly on their contributions, in China's fight for liberation and social development. He encouraged women to be confident and independent and to play a bigger role in building the country.

Hu Jintao said the basic national policy of gender equality should be fully implemented. He called for governments at all levels to protect women's rights, to help those in need and to eliminate discrimination. He directed the Women's Federations at all levels to play an active role in helping women.

Hu Jintao also encouraged Chinese women to carry more international exchanges and cooperations and promote peace and development of the world.
