The president of the UN General Assembly, Miguel d'Escoto Brockmann, said here Friday that the outcome document, just approved by a high-level UN meeting, is "a great gain."
"It has been a recognition, in fact, of the General Assembly as the proper venue for the world financial matters," he told a press conference shortly after the high-level UN meeting adopted the 16-page outcome document and the follow-up actions.
"As you know, this is the only second UN conference on the world financial matters," he said, referring to the UN Conference on the Monetary and Financial System held in Bretton Woods for the first time in 1944 with the participation of all the then 44 members of the UN. In that sense, this is a truly historic meeting.
The high-level meeting, which opened here on Wednesday, is the first of the high-level UN conference on the international financial crisis, which turns out to be the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression.
