Egypt has reported its first A/H1N1 influenza case, World Health Organization's regional office in Cairo said on Tuesday.
The case "is a 12-year-old Egyptian-American girl who came from the United States via Holland yesterday (Monday)," Dr. Hassan el-Boshra, adviser for communicable disease at WHO's Regional Office for Eastern Mediterranean, told Xinhua.
"She was detected at Cairo airport... after developing a fever during the flight," Dr. Hassan said, adding that "the case was confirmed this (Tuesday) afternoon."
She has been treated with anti-virus drug Tamiflu and is now in "good condition," Dr Hassan said.
Meanwhile, Egyptian Health Ministry is now trying to reach the other 145 passengers on board the same flight, Dr. Hassan added.
The case is the first in the populous African country, and the 24th in the Middle East region.
Egypt, the most populous Arab country that has been hit hard by the fatal bird flu, decided in late April to cull all the pigs in the country to stem the highly infectious flu that has killed 115 people worldwide.
Israel has up to now reported 17 cases of the flu, Turkey reported 4 cases, the United Arab Emirates 1, Oman 1.
Eighteen US soldiers have been confirmed infected with the flu virus during transit in Kuwait in late May.
