Russia is actively developing a vaccine against the A/H1N1 flu virus, a senior Russian lawmaker said on Wednesday.

"The physiological qualities of this virus are being examined, a vaccine against the flu virus is being developed," said Olga Borzova, chairwoman of the lower chamber's Health Care Committee, quoted by the Itar-Tass news agency.

Borzova told a session of the State Duma, lower house of parliament, when legislators elaborated on the spreading of the flu in the world and the threat it poses to people.

Borzova said Russia's preventive measures against the A/H1N1 flu were effective.

Borzova added that the committee was constantly monitoring the spread of the virus around the world.

Russia has so far reported no A/H1N1 flu cases. Local media reports said a vaccine against the flu virus would be available in future months. President Dmitry Medvedev said Saturday that Russia was prepared to deal with the virus.

According to the World Health Organization and government data, confirmed deaths of the flu worldwide reaches 83, with 74 in Mexico, seven in the United States, one in Canada and one in Costa Rica.

Confirmed cases worldwide are more than 9,830 in 40 countries and regions, most in the United States and Mexico.
