Australian Delegation in Mexico to Cut Trip Short

An Australian parliamentary delegation will cut short its Mexican trip because of the swine flu outbreak, a member of the six-person delegation led by Senate President John Hogg said on Tuesday.
"We are cutting short our trip by a couple of days, we're meeting with the Mexican parliament tomorrow ... and then we will be returning to Australia on the Wednesday," Labor backbencher Belinda Neal said.
Neal said members of the delegation, who arrived in Mexico City on Monday, have been taking precautions to protect themselves against the disease.
"But we are taking the precautions that are recommended by the Mexican government in that we are not really getting involved in any very big events, we're keeping to fairly small meetings and we are not going out anymore than we really need to," Neal said.
According to Neal, the Mexican government had closed local schools and banned major cultural and sporting events that attracted large numbers of people in an attempt to contain the spread of swine flu.
"There are a lot of people wearing face masks out in the street and in public places," Neal said.
