NW China Quake Followed by 1,350 Aftershocks

A total of 1,350 aftershocks have been detected in Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai Province, after a 7.1-magnitude earthquake hit the region on April 14, said seismological authorities.

As of 8:00 PM Wednesday, the area has been hit by 1,350 aftershocks, 13 of which surpassed 3 magnitude.

Of the 13 aftershocks, the biggest one was a 6.3-magnitude tremor that jolted Yushu at 9:25 AM on April 14, Qinghai Provincial Seismological Bureau said in a statement.

In addition, three aftershocks were measured between 4.0-4.9 magnitude and nine between 3.0-3.9 magnitude.

Both the frequency and severity of aftershocks were on a downward trend, it said.

The quake has left at least 2,183 dead, 84 missing and 12,135 injured, including 1,434 seriously hurt, as of 5:00 PM Wednesday.
