Qinghai Quake Cuts Telecoms

The earthquake has disrupted telecommunications in parts of the Yushu Tibetan autonomous prefecture. Telecom companies are scrambling to repair damaged equipment and destroyed cables.
Concern about the earthquake triggered a surge in phone calls to and from Yushu. The quake has caused cracks in equipment rooms of local telecom companies. Cables were also damaged in several counties in Yushu.
Telecom companies have responded by dispatching vehicles equipped with power generators and satellite phones. Emergency teams have also arrived to repair communications in the quake zone.
