The Ministry of Public Security says that, so far, more than 1,000 people have been rescued from the rubble in Yushu County.

3pm local time, and 6 hours of hard work pays off. Armed police rescue a female teacher from a collapsed building at Yushu Professional School.

An hour later, a male student is also pulled out. The student is in a serious condition.

More than 20 teachers and students were trapped in the buildings and the rescue work is continuing.

In Jiegu Township, a man was saved from a collapsed building, but 8 others are still trapped there. The quake started a fire in the building, and that's making the rescue even more difficult. Local reporters say the biggest problem is, they don't have any large digging equipment.

Rescue equipment was sent from neighboring provinces, immediately after the quake. But the distance is far, and the roads have been badly damaged by the tremor.
