China to 'Do Its Own Work Well' to Take up More Int'l Responsibilities

China will do its own work well to take up more international responsibilities, a spokesman of the country's top political advisory body said Tuesday.
Zhao Qizheng, spokesman of the annual session of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), said at a press conference that what happens in China often affects the world, and the outside world has a growing influence on China.
"China has come to the center of world stage," he said.
He cited China's role in the global financial crisis as an example, saying the international trade would have been worse affected if China was also hit by economic downturn.
He said China must persist in the independent foreign policy, and shall safeguard its own interests and those of the world as well.
Zhao said as a UN Security Council permanent member, China dispatched the most people for peacekeeping missions that contributed a lot to world peace and stability.
He said that ahead of the Copenhagen climate summit last December, China "unconditionally" set a target of reducing carbon intensity by 40 to 45 percent by 2020 from the 2005 level.
The country also pledged by 2020 the consumption of non-fossil energy would make up 15 percent, he said, adding some countries did not set any emission reduction goal at all.
