UN Needs Secure Humanitarian Corridors

United Nations officials say they need more police and troops on the ground in earthquake devastated Haiti. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon is asking the Security Council to approve 3,500 more peacekeepers in the country.
UN officials want the extra personnel in order to secure humanitarian corridors to provide aid to increasingly desperate Haitians. In a news conference UN Under-Secretary-General Alain Le Roy outlined two humanitarian corridors. One's between the capital Port-au-Prince and the bordering Dominican Republic. The other's between Port-au-Prince and northern Haitian ports.
Alain Le Roy, UN Dept. of Peacekeeping Operations, said, "Of course there are incidents here and there, sporadic incidents here and there mostly due to frustration for not getting food and water quickly enough. So, we consider we had enough troops for the global security but we have now to increase the number of troops and police to escort the humanitarian convoy who of course day by day are increasing drastically. And it is very important that humanitarian convoy can reach very rapidly the people otherwise we will have security problems."
