Senegal has decided to double its aid to Haiti from US$500,000 to US$1 million, the government announced on Monday after consultations on the situation in the island state struck by a violent earthquake.
Senegal has also decided to organize a Telethon and an Africa vision broadcast across big television channels on the continent with a view of mobilizing resources for Haiti, Minister of Mines Ousmane Ngom said.
The minister made the announcement in a summary report of a meeting presided over Senegalese President Abdoulaye Wade.
Among other measures taken at the meeting were a petition to the African Union to adopt a resolution on an African Day of Solidarity with Haiti, and an urgent plan on the involvement of the African Parliament and the parliaments of African countries.
The Senegalese president on Friday offered residential land to Haitians wishing to settle in Africa.
