The earthquake has filled the people of Haiti with fear and uncertainty. It's almost impossible to get any rest in the disaster zone.
So let's take a look at how victims endured their first night after the deadly jolt.
Night fell with no power or communications networks.
It's not only difficult for rescue operations but also to tell how much destruction has been caused by the massive quake. Many fear thousands of people are buried under the debris.
"There are different people gathering together to try to get vehicles to be able to evacuate injured people, the infrastructure is all down at the moment, there is no power, very dark."
A journalist says there are people underneath the rubble who still need to be saved.
Carel Pedre, Journalist, Port-Au-Prince, said, "Now it's midnight, we don't have the means with which to get everyone out of here and we don't have enough food for everyone. People are dying."
Several government buildings have been damaged, including the presidential palace. But President Rene Preval and his wife escaped safely.
A local university collapsed, trapping an unknown number of students.
