The Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency MSB said on Wednesday it would send two people to participate in the United Nations Disaster Assessment and Coordination teams on their way to Haiti to provide assistance to the country devastated by Tuesday's strong earthquake.
Sweden has not yet received formal requests from Haiti. The UN tried to help with IT and communications support when there is natural disaster in Haiti. That is also one of the areas Sweden is proved good, said a statement from MSB.
"Sweden will send two people as early as tonight. It's not uncommon for us to receive requests from the UN to help with IT and communications support," MSB spokesperson Karin Wiklund was quoted by local media report as saying.
The headquarters of the UN mission in Port-au-Prince, where 12 Swedes are stationed, also collapsed, reported the Swedish electronic newspaper The Local, adding that seven of the Haiti-based Swedes had contacted the ministry to say that they were fine.
According to earlier report, a 7.0-magnitude earthquake hit Haiti on Tuesday local time, collapsing a hospital and damaging government buildings in its capital city of Port-au-Prince.
