Former US president Bill Clinton, who serves as UN chief Ban Ki-moon's special envoy for Haiti, on Wednesday urged people around the world to make donations for quake relief effort in Haiti.

"For the next week or ten days, we need water, food, shelter, and first-aid supplies," Clinton told an emergency meeting of the UN General Assembly on the Haiti earthquake.

Clinton stressed there is a great desire around the world to help the Haitian people and he encouraged people to donate money for the relief effort.

"So the most important thing individuals can do, who care, is to send cash -- even if it's a dollar, or two dollars," he said.

A website (www.clintonfoundation.org/haitiearthquake) has been set up for people who want to make their donations to the Red Cross and the Red Crescent, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) or any other humanitarian groups, he said.

"All the money will be immediately dispersed to people on the ground for food, water, first-aid supplies, and shelter," he pledged.
