Israel Defends Its Probes into Gaza War

Israel's Foreign Ministry said on Friday that Israel has conducted a reliable investigation into its own actions in the Gaza war after the UN chief refrained from judging the probe's credibility.
"This document completely expresses Israel's commitment to conduct an honest internal probe according to the standards of international law," said a statement from the ministry quoted by local daily Ha'aretz.
The assertion came after the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said he was "uncertain" whether Israel has carried out credible investigations in accordance with UN demands.
Despite Ban's remarks, Israel is "satisfied that the secretary general of the United Nations accurately reflected the Israeli document submitted this week," said the statement.
Ban confirmed Thursday that he has received Israeli and Palestinian responses to allegations of war crimes, saying that Israel has responded to every charge brought against it.
The documents from Israel and the Palestinians were answers to a report issued last September by a UN mission established to investigate the Gaza war and led by South African jurist Richard Goldstone. The report accused both Israel and Palestinian militants of war crimes and possible crimes against humanity.
The Jewish state rejected the Goldstone report as prejudiced and full of errors. Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip, also denied the charges.
Israel waged a three-week offensive against Hamas in the Palestinian enclave more than a year ago, after Gazan militant groups fired rockets into southern Israel over the span of several years.
The war left around 1,400 Palestinians dead, including hundreds of civilians, and caused widespread property damage in Gaza. 13 Israelis also died during the conflicts.
