Abbas Insists Not to Resume Peace Talks Unless Settlements Halted

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas sticks to his decision of not resuming peace talks with Israel unless the Jewish state stops settlement activities in the West Bank, a Palestinian official said Tuesday.
Saeb Erekat, a senior Palestinian peace negotiator, said that Abbas will tell the US Middle East envoy George Mitchell, who arrived in the West Bank on Tuesday, about his decision.
Mitchell arrived in Ramallah after holding a series of meetings with Israeli officials, aiming at exploring chances of reviving the peace negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians. He is scheduled to meet Abbas Tuesday evening.
Meanwhile, Erekat denied any official proposal for holding a three-way summit between Abbas, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President Barack Obama.
"Such a meeting will enable Netanyahu to promote himself as a man seeking peace and negotiation," Erekat told Xinhua.
