Palestinian FM Calls on World to Oblige Israel to Implement Roadmap

Palestinian Foreign Minister Reyad al-Maliki on Monday called on the international community to oblige Israel to implement the Roadmap plan for peace in the Middle East.

Implementing the peace plan will be an introduction to resuming the peace process in the region, said al-Maliki in a statement following a meeting with an Australian parliamentary delegation.

He reiterated that "what the Palestinians need is to establish an independent state with full sovereignty and geographical communication with Jerusalem as its capital."

The 2003 international Roadmap plan foresees the creation of a Palestinian state after a series of steps taken by both Israelis and Palestinians.

The Palestinian foreign minister lashed out at Israeli visions related to establishing the Palestinian state, saying "he divested the elements of the Palestinian states to exist ... he didn't respect Israel's commitments to the Roadmap."

On June 14, hawkish Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu clearly announced that Israel is ready to see a demilitarized Palestinian state, if the Palestinians recognize his state as a Jewish state.

Netanyahu denied the Palestinian refugees' right of return to the territories of the Jewish state. He promised that his government will not build up new Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, but will consider the natural growth of settlements.

"The international efforts must be unified in order to achieve the desired peace and the aspirations of all parties by establishing the independent Palestinian state," said al-Maliki.
