On June 14, 2007, and following a week of bloody armed clashes with Abbas Fatah security forces in the Gaza Strip, Hamas took control of the enclave. The West Bank remained under Abbas' control.
Since then, the two rival movements have been cracking down on each other's members and militants. Hundreds of Hamas members were arrested in the West Bank, and hundreds of Fatah members were detained in Gaza.
Egypt is mediating intensive dialogue between the two groups, aiming at ending their feuds and reaching a reconciliation agreement.
