Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas will explain to the US administration that there will be no peace talks with Israel unless it removes checkpoints and stops settlement activities in the West Bank, a Palestinian official said Thursday.

"The Palestinian National Authority (PNA) stipulates the removing of the military checkpoints and stopping the settlements in the West Bank before the negations with Israel are resumed," said Ahmed Qurei, the senior peace negotiator.

"Abu Mazen (Abbas) will clarify those two conditions to (US President) Barack Obama when they meet in Washington later today," Qurei added.

"There will be no any sort of negotiations unless the settlement activities completely stop, including the so-called natural growth of the settlements," he added.

Abbas arrived in Washington late Tuesday for his first official meeting with US president Obama expected to focus on Israel's continued building of settlements in occupied territory.

The meeting between Abbas and Obama comes as the White House toughened its tone against the settlements in the West Bank which will make the largest part of the future Palestinian statehood.

The settlement activities were the main obstacle that foiled a 2007 US initiative in which the peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians resumed.
