The Palestinian ambassador to Britain called on Iran to go between Hamas and Fatah to bring them together, the official IRNA news agency reported on Sunday.
The Palestinian officials have "normal" relations with Iran and the Islamic Republic should go between Hamas and Fatah, Manuel Hassassian, Palestinian Ambassador to the United Kingdom, said in an exclusive interview with IRNA in London.
"We expect Iran to play a more reconciliatory role between Palestinian factions as a major power in the Middle East ... and Iran should bring Fatah and Hamas together in confronting the Israeli occupation," he said.
"Iran should understand the complexity of the situation" and avoid dividing Palestinians by "convincing Hamas that the nationalunity government is the only solution," he added.
Hassassian also acknowledged that the Islamic Republic has been giving enormous support to the Palestinian cause since the victory of the Islamic Revolution in 1979.
Last week, during a UN Security Council meeting on the latest developments in the Middle East, British Foreign Minister David Miliband accused Iran of "interfering in the Palestinian affairs and taking advantage of their pains and sufferings."
Tehran denies the charge and insists on declaring its all-out support for the deposed Hamas authorities in the Gaza Strip as the "sole and legal" Palestinian government.
