Hamas: Success of Dialogue Depends on Stopping US Intervention

Islamic Hamas movement on Saturday said that success of the inter-Palestinian dialogue, mediated by Egypt, depends on stopping the US intervention.
Salah al-Bardaweel, a senior Hamas leader in Gaza, rejected "the US interventions" which seek to get his movement accepting international demands of recognizing Israel and renouncing violence. He also said that Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas "unluckily supports the US bids."
Hamas and Abbas's Fatah movement will resume their unity talks in Cairo between May 16 and 19, trying to reach a reconciliation agreement. The pact seems to be based on holding general elections in January 2010 and forming a unity government afterward.
"Until now, there are no clear plans for the fifth round of dialogue which will aim at reuniting the Palestinian front," al-Bardaweel said.
The dialogue mainly tries to overcome the consequences of Hamas' violent takeover of the Gaza Strip in 2007 and the ensuing split which occurred after Abbas formed a new government based in West Bank. Political ties between the two Palestinian territories were almost completely cut.
