Official: Israel Still Prevents Cash Shipments to Gaza

Israel still delays cash shipments to Gaza Strip, making the Palestinian Authority (PA) unable to pay February salaries for its servants there, an official said on Monday.
"The Israeli side did not yet accept the delivery of bank-notes to the Gaza banks," said Jihad al-Wazir, director of Palestinian Monetary Authority (PMA).
On Sunday, the Gaza banks started paying only 1,000 Israeli Shekels (about US$240) for every employee as an advanced payment or loan from their overdue salaries.
"Every bank used the available cash and paid for the employees in order to ease their burdens," al-Wazir added. "The full salaries would be paid when the cash enters Gaza."
Al-Wazir says the Gaza Strip needs about 250 million Shekels every month to cover the salaries. He warns that the current crisis also affects the poor people who depend on the government's aid.
Israel imposed severe restrictions on Gaza Strip and developed them to a blockade in 2007 after Islamic Hamas movement seized control of the territory.
