Major Events After Hamas-led Palestinian Gov't Comes to Power in 2006

The Palestinian emergency government, led by Salam Fayyad, was sworn in on Sunday in the West Bank city of Ramallah, marking the collapse of the three-month-old Fatah-Hamas unity government.

The following are some major events that had happened since the Hamas-led government took office after defeating Fatah led by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in parliamentary elections in 2006.

January 25, 2006 -- Hamas emerged winner of parliamentary elections after defeating the long-dominant Fatah.

March 28, 2006 -- The Hamas-led government was sworn in.

May 11, 2006 -- Leaders of various Palestinian factions jailed in Israeli prisons jointly signed the Document of National Accord, urging the settlement of inter-Palestinian frictions and effort to build an independent state in occupied land.

June 25, 2006 -- Palestinian militants captured an Israeli solider, and Israel responded by sending troops into Gaza. The military action lasted five months.

June 27, 2006 -- Major Palestinian factions reached consensus on the Document of National Accord.

August 16, 2006 -- Abbas said Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haneya agreed to talk with Fatah and other factions on forming a national unity government.

October 1, 2006 -- Fierce clashes erupted between Hamas militants and Fatah supporters in Gaza, killing eight people and wounding over 70.

December 1, 2006 -- Abbas announced talks on forming a unity government collapsed.

December 16, 2006 -- Abbas said he had decided to push for a plan to hold early presidential and legislative elections in the Palestinian territories.

February 8, 2007 -- Abbas and Hamas politburo chief Khaled Mashaal signed the Mecca Agreement, which urged the two sides to end violence, form a national unity government and put the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) back in order.

February 15, 2007 -- The Palestinian government was dissolved, and Abbas authorized Haneya to build a new government.

March 17, 2007 -- The Fatah-Hamas unity government was sworn in.

May 23, 2007 -- Abbas and Haneya met to discuss how to stop the escalation of violence between Fatah and Hamas.

June 9, 2007 -- Militants from Hamas and Fatah clashed heavily in the Gaza Strip, causing as many as 30 casualties.

June 14, 2007 -- Hamas took control of Gaza from Fatah, which prompted Abbas to dismantle the unity government and announce a state of emergency in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

June 15, 2007 -- Abbas named Fayyad prime minister of an emergency government.
