Tokyo stocks plunged on Thursday to a two-week low, with the key Nikkei index dropping more than 500 points at one point, as worries over the financial sector persists.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average plummeted 456.87 points, or 5.25 percent, from Wednesday to 8,238.64. The day's low of 8,148.30 was marked in the early afternoon.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was down 37.70 points, or 4.31 percent, to 837.53.
Stocks declined almost across the board led by mining, insurance, and iron and steel issues. The only gainers were pulp and paper issues.
