Taiwan People Donate Another 64 Mln Yuan

During a quake-themed show here on Thursday evening, residents and companies from Taiwan have donated a total of 64 million yuan (US$9.38 million) for building schools in the quake zone.

They plan to spend 500,000 yuan for each primary school in the quake-hit areas and a total of 128 schools will be built.

The three-hour show includes songs and video clips. Many Taiwan singers joined mainland artists in the show.

The Taiwan Red Cross organization sent a rescue team to the quake zone in southwestern Sichuan Province from May 16 to 20 and a medical team, which treated 476 injured people, from May 20 to 25.

By the end of May, the Taiwan people had also been donating 2,000 tons of cement, 100 maritime satellite telephones, 100 tons of tents, sleeping bags and medical supplies, and other relief materials including food, medicine, underwear and bicycles, according to the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council.

The 8.0-magnitude earthquake centered on Sichuan' Wenchuan County had claimed 69,127 lives nationwide as of Thursday noon, while 373,612 were injured and 17,918 were missing.
