Overseas Chinese Raise Funds for Quake Victims

Chinese communities in Canada and the US are actively raising donations to help in recovery efforts following the Sichuan quake. One event called "Together Always" was staged at Nathan Phillips Square, near Toronto's City Hall.

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Toronto Mayor David Miller sent letters of condolence for quake victims. Many of the spectators felt deeply moved by the efforts of hundreds of volunteers.

A Hindu community in Toronto also began two-weeks of prayers and fundraising for China's quake-ravaged region.

In the United States, dozens of overseas Chinese communities and associations held a grand fundraising gala in the "automobile capital" Detroit. There was enthusiastic locals response. Donations to help disaster victims poured in.

Xie Yunliang, vice consul-general of China's Consulate General in Chicago, said, "Donations are coming from everywhere, not just from the Chinese community. We are deeply touched by people's charitable deeds."

Head of Detroit Chinese Community said, "So far we've received over US$690,000 in donations, not counting the amount we raised tonight."

The charity gala helped arouse public awareness of the need for help. Chinese people living overseas have revealed again and again that the bonds with their homeland remain strong.
