8 Years Needed for Reconstruction in Quake Areas

Sichuan's economic planning body has released plans for post-quake reconstruction.

The provincial Development and Reform Committee of Sichuan says severely damaged areas like Wenchuan County and its neighboring areas will be the focus of reconstruction. Infrastructure repair will also be a top priority, including the rebuilding of homes, schools, hospitals, and other public facilities. Other projects will include the resumption of water and power supplies, of transportation, and of telecommunications and broadcast.

Meanwhile, relief efforts, such as the provision of food, housing, and clothing, are expected to continue for up to three years. Officials say large-scale reconstruction will take another five years. The central government has set a budget of 70 billion yuan this year to rebuild quake-hit areas in Sichuan.
