Backgrounder: Earthquakes Above 6 Magnitude in China Since 1976

Listed below are the earthquakes above 6 on the Richter scale that have struck China since 1976:

A 6.2-magnitude earthquake hit Helinger in northwest Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region on April 6, 1976.

Two earthquakes measuring 7.3 and 7.4 magnitude hit Longling County in the western part of southwest Yunnan Province on May 29, 1976.

A 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit Tangshan City in north Hebei Province on July 28, 1976. The quake killed 242,000 people and caused 5.4 billion yuan (about US$770 million) of losses.

A 7.2-magnitude earthquake took place between Songpan and Wuping in southwest Sichuan Province on Aug. 16, 1976.

A 6-magnitude earthquake hit Liyang in east Jiangsu Province on July 9, 1979.

A 6.9-magnitude earthquake hit the Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Garze in Sichuan on Jan. 24, 1981.

A 6.3-magnitude earthquake hit Zeyi Township, Zhuanlong District in Luquan County in Yunnan on April 18, 1985.

A 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck at a mountain at the border of Wuqia and Shufu counties in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region on Aug. 23, 1985.

Two earthquakes measuring 7.6 and 7.2 magnitude hit Lancang and at the border area of Gengma and Cangyuan counties, respectively, in Yunnan on Nov. 6, 1988.

A 6.6-magnitude earthquake hit Xiaojin County in the Aba Authomous Prefecture of Tibetan and Qiang Nationalities in Sichuan on Sept. 22, 1989.

The Datong-Yanggao area in northwest Shanxi Province witnessed a number of moderate and strong quakes above 5 magnitude with the highest magnitude of 6.1 on Oct. 18, 1989.

A 6.9-magnitude earthquake occurred at the border of Gonghe and Xinghai counties in northwest Qinghai Province on April 26, 1990.

A 6.2-magnitude earthquake hit the border area of Tianzhu Tibetan Autonomous County, Jingtai County and Gulang County on Oct. 20, 1990.

A 7.3-magnitude earthquake hit the Taiwan Strait, with coastal areas of Guangdong and Fujian provinces suffering the loss of lives and properties on Sept. 16, 1994.

A 6.9-magnitude earthquake hit Yilan in Taiwan on July 12, 1995.

A 7.3-magnitude earthquake took place at the Sino-Myanmar border area in Menglian County in southwest China on July 12, 1995.

A 7.0-magnitude earthquake hit the Lijiang area in southwest Yunnan Province on Feb. 3, 1996.

A 6.9-magnitude earthquake hit Jiashi(Payzawat)-Atux area in the western Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region on March 19, 1996.

A 6.4-magnitude earthquake hit Guyang County, Baotou City in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region on May 3, 1996.

A 6.4-magnitude earthquake hit the Jiashi (Payzawat) area in Xinjiang on Jan. 21, 1997. A 6.6-magnitude earthquake hit the area on April 4, 1997.

A 6.2-magnitude earthquake hit the area east of Shangyi County in Hebei Province on Jan. 10, 1998.

A 6.2-magnitude earthquake hit Pishan County in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region on May 29, 1998.

A 6.6-magnitude earthquake hit Jiashi (Payzawat) in Xinjiang on Aug. 27, 1998.

A 6.2-magnitude earthquake hit Ninglang Autonomous County of Yi Nationality in southwest Yunnan Province on Nov. 19, 1998.

A 7.6-magnitude earthquake hit the area southwest of Hualien in Taiwan on Sept. 21, 1999.

A 6.5-magnitude earthquake hit Yao'an in southwest Yunnan Province on Jan. 15, 2000.

A 6.4-magnitude earthquake happened in the sea east of Taiwan on June 14, 2001.

A 6.0-magnitude earthquake hit Yongsheng County, Yunnan on Oct. 27, 2001.

A 7.5-magnitude earthquake happened in the sea east of Taiwan on March 31, 2002.

A 6.5-magnitude earthquake happened in the sea east of Su'ao in Taiwan on May 15, 2002.

A 6.2-magnitude earthquake happened in the sea east of Hualien in Taiwan on May 29, 2002.

A 7.2-magnitude earthquake hit Wangqing, Jilin Province on June 29, 2002.

A 6.8-magnitude earthquake hit Jiashi in Xinjiang on Feb. 24, 2003.

A 6.6-magnitude hit Delingha in Qinghai on April 17, 2003.

A 6.1-magnitude earthquake happened at the border area of Tibet Autonomous Region and Qinghai Province on July 7, 2003.

A 6.2-magnitude earthquake hit Dayao, Yunnan on July 21, 2003.

A 6.1-magnitude earthquake happened between Minle and Shandan in northwest Gansu Province on Oct. 25, 2003.

A 6.5-magnitude earthquake happened in the sea east of Taiwan on Nov. 8, 2004.

A 6.2-magnitude earthquake hit Wushi (Uqturpan) in Xinjiang on Feb. 15, 2005.
