Tuesday marks "World Car Free Day". And here in China, more than 100 cities have taken part and lent their support to "greener" modes of transport, such as walking, cycling and taking the bus.
Authorities in Guangzhou set up special areas to promote "Car Free Day", while also taking 90 percent of cars reserved for official use off the roads. While over in Kunming City, public officials were urged to lead by example and opt for transport less damaging to the environment. Both Guangzhou and Kunming have also taken steps to ensure smooth traffic.
In Shanghai, authorities are marking "Car Free Day" by sealing off some streets, and only allowing pedestrians, cyclists, buses and taxis access to them.
Volunteers in Hangzhou handed out cards to drivers, asking them to think green and take an alternative form of transport.
And certainly in Dalian, "Car Free Day" has met with a positive response.
Dalian residents said, "Taking the bus is good for the environment. It means less people using private cars and lower gas emissions."
"Taking the bus benefits both the environment and our health."
