Singapore's Land Transport Authority (LTA) has set out trials to build roads with recycled waste materials, local media reported on Wednesday.

According to local radio 938 Live, the LTA is exploring using both processed road construction wastes and industrial waste in future new roads, which would be made up of 70 percent of recycled materials.

The report said the effort is to ensure long term sustainability and make Singapore less dependent on imported materials.

The clean energy industry is identified as a strategic key growth industry for Singapore. According to the Clean Energy blueprint of the city-state, the clean energy sector is expected to generate a total of 170 million Singapore dollars (about US$111 million) in value-added and 7,000 new jobs by 2015.
