Sydney Pioneers to Expand Green Vehicles Network

Australia's city of Sydney will help lead an international push to fast-track for electric vehicles (EVs) to reduce emissions, the Lord Mayor of Sydney Clover Moore said on Tuesday.
Moore, Member of Parliament, said Sydney is a signatory to spearhead a program committed to accelerating delivery and use of EVs in partnership with the C40 Climate Leadership Group. The first charging stations will be built before the end of 2010.
He said Sydney will establish charging stations and convert car fleets.
Moore said the commitment to EV dovetails with the City's actions on green infrastructure implementation through its Sustainable Sydney 2030 program which sets to reduce 70 percent of CO2 by 2030 based on 2006 levels.
Transportation of more than 700,000 vehicles in Sydney each day account for some 9 percent of the City's greenhouse gases. Recent research showed that CO2 could be cut in half through sustainable modes of transport.
