The eye-catching first round of the China-US Strategic and Economic Dialogue (S&ED), after yielding a series of positive results, concluded in Washington on Tuesday.

The dialogue has opened a new chapter of the China-US dialogue.

The dialogue mechanism is a result of an important consensus reached by Chinese President Hu Jintao and his US counterpart Barack Obama during their meeting in London on April 1.

It is also a strategic measure to boost the China-US mutually beneficial cooperation in various fields, and the healthy and stable development of China-US ties in a new era.

The mechanism, a fruit of the 30-year-old China-US relationship, reflects the inevitable tendency in the development of the Sino-US relations and the world situation.

Over the past 30 years, the China-US ties, especially in trade and economic fields, have constantly matured, creating an interdependent, win-win situation of common development.

After President Obama came into office, the bilateral ties have developed in a steady and healthy manner. Against the backdrop of the global financial crisis and the volatile international situation, it is in the interests of the two peoples and helpful for peace, stability and prosperity of the Asia-Pacific region and the whole world that both countries further promote their cooperative level on various bilateral and global issues.

The dialogue mechanism provides an important platform for both sides to further expand their communication and cooperation.

China and the United States, as the world's biggest developing and developed countries, share broader common interests and a cooperation foundation, and thus shoulder more important common responsibilities amid the current financial crisis.

In the dialogue, both sides made a positive evaluation of the bilateral ties, underlined the role of close high-level contacts and exchanges, agreed to expand military exchanges at various levels, and encouraged cultural exchanges and cooperation.

The two sides also held a frank, in-depth exchange of views on neutralizing the impact of the international financial crisis, pushing for an early recovery of the world economy, coping with global climate change, developing clean and high-efficient energy, protecting environment, and ensuring energy security. Important results have been achieved on these issues.

This mechanism shows that the two sides are working together to build a relationship of all-around cooperation oriented toward the 21st century.

The establishment of the S&ED mechanism has also laid a solid foundation for the two sides to deepen mutual understanding, expand common ground, narrow differences, improve mutual trust and promote cooperation.

During the two-day dialogue, officials from the two governments listened carefully to each other's concerns, conducted close contacts and jointly responded to reporters.

In this high-level, large-scale interactive process, officials from the two governments have expanded contacts and deepened communication, which will help the two sides come to terms and accumulate consensus on a series of important bilateral and global affairs.

The S&ED, together with other bilateral mechanisms, will jointly push forward the development of the China-U.S. relations.

Such relations are one of the most important bilateral ties in the world. In the future, China and the United States need to resolve a series of bilateral and global issues through cooperation.

Based on the success of the first round of the strategic and economic dialogue, the two sides should further boost the development of the bilateral ties, take more substantial and fruitful steps, and continue to write new chapters for their cooperation.
