China joined more than 150 other countries on Monday in the 10:10 campaign to cut carbon emissions by 10 percent a year.
The China branch of Roots and Shoots held a ceremony at Yucai School in Beijing, vowing to adopt a low-carbon lifestyle at its Beijing office. 10:10 began in the UK in 2009 and now includes individuals, businesses and organizations from 152 countries.
Lei Chen Wong, director of Roots and Shoots China, said her organization will translate the 10:10 manual, organize activities and decrease carbon emissions at its Beijing office.
UK Deputy Ambassador Chris Wood explained carbon-cutting efforts of the British Embassy in China. Since the British government joined the campaign at the beginning of the year, the embassy has cut its carbon emissions by 12 percent by using hybrid cars, energy-saving bulbs and recycling office supplies, Wood said.
Students from Yucai School displayed handicrafts made from recycled materials.
